The Past, Present and Future of PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition which causes one to feel extreme anxiety and distress in the aftermath of a major event, especially one that involves potential or actual loss of life.

Some of the kinds of events that can lead to PTSD are a destructive fire, a natural disaster, or even a particularly stressful and emotional divorce. Victims of rape are also likely to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in some cases.

Now that people are more aware of PTSD and its effects than they were in the past, treatment is being made a priority. Experts know that people who have experienced war are at a high risk for developing PTSD, so they are making an effort to educate their communities and take preventive steps to protect soldiers.

A recent article provides a comprehensive explanation of what PTSD, who it affects, and how most psychiatrists try to treat the disorder. There is an overview of the methods people have used to deal with PTSD in returning soldiers and veterans. There is also mention of the debate over whether drugs can be effectively used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
