Recent findings in psychiatry show markedly higher cognitive functioning in schizophrenics with panic disorder. Patients in the study who had schizophrenia with panic disorder scored much higher on intelligence and verbal ability than did patients who had traditional schizophrenia. With more research, psychiatrists can gain a better understanding of how to treat the distinctive symptoms of schizophrenia with panic disorder.
Panic attacks have been reported in 7.1%-47.5% of patients with schizophrenia, depending on the population surveyed and the techniques used to assess them. Similarly, panic disorder has been reported in 4.2%-35%.
