Exposure Therapy As Treatment for Phobias


Exposure therapy involves progressively becoming comfortable with a source of distress. Commonly used to treat anxiety disorders, exposure therapy is shown to effectively reduce unhealthy behaviors. The brain of a person who has received exposure therapy for a phobia is noticeably less reactive to the feared object. The improvements in the brain remain even six months after treatment. Two women with arachnophobia (an intense fear of spiders) were able to remain in close proximity to a tarantula with little anxiety after a single session.
